How the Mull Lottery Money is Supporting Sport on Mull

On an island maintaining sports facilities with no Council or other public support is a very expensive undertaking. The Mull Lottery was started to help finance the Garmony facilities.

Local support for the lottery has been outstanding. Receiving the lottery income has supplied funds not just to help up-keep buildings and pitches but also to expand club activities. The club now runs tag rugby teams, mini teams, junior teams as well as the senior team.

Against the national trend of a move away from taking part in sports Mull Rugby Club have more active participants than ever before. This is good news for all of us that are concerned about children spending too much time “online”.

The lottery money is essential for maintaining the Garmony Playing Field. The playing fields are available for all sports - anyone who has attended the wonderful “Primary School Sports Day” will appreciate how important the Garmony  facility is to all of Mull. However the work of the club does not stop there. Looking to the future Mull Rugby Club has used £6,000 of Mull Lottery money towards employing a rugby development officer for Argyll and Bute. The Mull contribution has not been beaten by any other club in our area.

It is of a result of this success and the assistance of Lottery income that the Mull Rugby Club has been able to improve the facilities at Garmony.

This very wet winter has forcefully shown the need for an Indoor Sports Hall. This indoor facility would be available for all. Good examples to benefit would be basketball and our very fine indoor athletics clubs. Garmony is the ideal situation as it is between our two ferry terminals. This will enable Mull teams to compete against visiting teams from all parts of Scotland.

Also having an indoor facility at Garmony would be a joy to all those who give their time to organise outdoor events. The option to move indoors would allow confident planning of sports days, training and much more (if the weather turns out to be bad just move indoors). Canceling well planned events is one of the most demoralizing tasks for voluntary organizers.

Mull Rugby Club is always working to improve participation in sports facilities on Mull. Please continue to support our efforts by purchasing Mull Lottery Tickets or helping the Club in any other way you can think of.
